Being a great interpreter takes passion, knowledge, and patience. No one knows this more than Bryan Lee.

Growing up in a Korean-American family, Lee combined his knowledge of both languages and cultures, with his love of sports, to become an interpreter for Korean-speaking baseball players. His latest client is Hyun-jin Ryu, a rising star who was signed to the Toronto Blue Jays for $80 million.

Lee didn’t expect to work with such a high-profile client when he started out. Nor did he expect our current situation. He and his client, along with the rest of the team, are currently isolated in a Florida hotel, wondering what will happen to professional baseball in the time of COVID.

In addition to these unexpected circumstances is the very nature of Lee’s job, translating sports terms and instructions that can be very elaborate, or need to be elaborated, on the spot. This is a challenge that Lee has only realized the complexity of as he’s experienced it.

Read on for a fascinating profile of a sports interpreter.
